Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 6th October 2011
Charlie Diver won the latest medal tournament sponsored by the Nesbitt Arms Hotel. The 21-handicapper enjoyed an excellent front nine of just seven over gross, thanks in no small part to a birdie on the second. It was harder coming home but he hung in there, finishing strongly for a one stroke victory.
The previous Sunday’s fourball stroke was won by Messrs’ McCole and McDwyer who blitzed the front nine in seven under par net! They would better the back nine by just a stroke as the course fought back but good vibes emanating from their birdies at 3, 7 and 8 kept them going and they even totted up another birdie at 14.
The latest Wednesday Open benefitted from better weather after the previous week’s cancellation, though the strong breeze made scoring difficult. Sean Rodgers rolled back the years with an exemplary display of golf, covering the 18 holes in 39 points for a massive five-point win.
Glenties won the annual Rider Cup challenge match against Ardara in convincing fashion and hats off to the victors in a tussle which is always played in a splendid atmosphere.
The members were saddened to hear of the death of Jim Patton who graced the course for many years. We send our condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
