We commiserate with Sean Callaghan on the recent passing of his sister Oliveen. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
Our Jimmy Bruen side went ever so close to qualifying at City of Derry. A one point deficit at the final count proved heart-breaking for the lads but they are to be commended for their efforts on the parkland course. Martin Roarty’s side included the pairings of John Molloy and Cathal Donoghue; Kevin Patton and Sean Hanrahan; Eamonn McGill and Pauric McHugh; Eddie Gregg and Seamus McGarvey; Columba Gavigan and Joseph McLoone. Eddie Gregg’s eagle following a riverdance all of its own was the main talking point afterwards!
Sean Hanrahan warmed up for his Jimmy Bruen exploits by winning last Wednesday’s Open by a single shot from Hughie Moore. The thespian has recently come down to single figures, something which was on the cards for a long time considering the quality of his swing and temperament. No birdies adorned the card but the pars were omnipresent!
Dudley Coyle returned the winning score in the Killybegs Golf Society stableford played on Sunday. A birdie at the first got the motor running and steady golf from then on in the windy conditions guaranteed a high finish. In the end, he had two shots to spare over Killybegs’ finest, Sean Rodgers. Enda Moore joined the exclusive hole-in-one-club on Sunday, holing out at the short 16th to the delight of his fourball. I should add for the record that Gerald McDwyer also enjoyed a hole in one when winning the Haiti Fundraiser in March, the ace coming at the 3rd following a well-executed four iron shot.
Monday’s scramble was competitive as always, with the Strabane/Letterkenny combo coming out trumps with a superb score of 58.9. Kevin Patton, Finnian O’Doherty, Deirdre Patton and Mark Patton fired eight birdies and an eagle on 13 to return a nine under par gross total of 64, the only blemish coming at the long fourth.
