Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 24th May 2011
Kevin Patton showed a welcome return to form this past week, finishing runner-up in successive events. The Strabane golfer had to yield second best to Ulster cup stalwart, Joseph McLoone in the Wednesday Open, finishing two behind the Glenties lad who recorded 32 points on a difficult scoring day. He was closer still on Sunday in the Maguire Meats competition, pushing Paddy Boyle all the way but coming up short on a break-off-tie. Paddy worked the ball well in the wind, avoiding the huge scores which littered most cards on the day. His par at the last proved the winning score. The stroke format rewarded the consistent golfers on the day and made it an exciting finish, with John Quinn also finishing on the same total in third.
Sean Hanrahan and Cathal Donoghue’s Ulster Cup side won a magnificent four and a half matches in its away encounter with Blackwood in this second round encounter in Bangor. The playing of a practice round in atrocious conditions on the Saturday may have proved the difference the following day, as the Portnoo lads were prepared for the fine parkland course at its windiest and softest. All of the golfers played well, but perhaps the putt of the day belonged to Joseph McLoone who holed a thirty foot screamer on the last for a half! The team featured John Ban Gallagher, P.J. Gallagher, Frankie Kennedy, Columba Gavigan, Joseph McLoone, Sean Cafferty and Patrick Boyle. The home leg is on Sunday, as is the Minor League’s return match against Donegal.
