Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 1st February 2011
The Captains’ Drive-in has been been re-scheduled for this Saturday, February 5th at 10a.m. It will be followed by a fourball mixed scramble under a shotgun start. Let’s hope the weather is kinder than hitherto fore.
The club’s latest Gaeltacht match had to be postponed due to the hard frost last Saturday. Sunday’s golf went ahead as scheduled, with Malachy Murrin of Killybegs triumphing with 40 points on a break-off-tie from Sean Connaughton. Malachy’s little two at the High Altar was a key moment with just a couple of holes to play.
The previous Sunday’s competition was won by Daniel McGeehan who found the 15 hole format used on the frosty day much to his liking. Temporary greens did not faze him one little bit and he even managed a birdie at Vinny’s Corner. Kevin McCready won the Wednesday Open on January 19th with 38 points over 16 holes. The birdie three at O’Boyle’s Fort was a superb way to finish a great round and ensured a one-shot victory over Steven McHugh in second. I erroneously credited ace golfer, Donie McCole with success in the same event, but I am sure that I will be writing about one of the ‘winningest’ golfers in the club very soon! Tom Rawdon won the latest of these popular mid-week opens, just preventing Kevin McCready from winning two in a row. A rare birdie at the fifth for Tom contributed handsomely to his total.
