Glenties Notes on 13th March 2006

The death took place in St. Luke’s Hospital, Dublin on Saturday 4th March 2006 of Nancy Mc Loone, (nee Bonner) Narin Road, Glenties. Her remains were brought to her home on Sunday evening and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Tuesday. Fr. John Mc Loone P.P. Frosses, Monsignor Dan Mc Dyre, Fr. Willie Mc Menamin, Drumoghill, Fr. Martin Collum C.C. Mountcharles, Fr. Paul Gallagher C.C. Glenties, Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Dungloe and Fr. Adrian Gavigan Chaplain Letterkenny Hospital concelebrated Requiem Mass at 11.00a.m. Readings were by Sr. Anne Mc Loone and Brian Mc Devitt, Nancy’s sister-in-law and brother- in-law. Her nieces and nephew, Finola Quinn, Mary O’Brien, Anne Mc Bride and John Campbell read Prayers of the Faithful. Jackie Mc Grath, Colleen Mc Dyre, Aaron Thompson, Carina Ward, Emily Breslin, Oonagh Campbell, Jimmy Mc Kelvey, Brian Carr, her granddaughter Caoimhe, her sisters Angela, Kathleen and Bried and her brother Neily brought the Gifts to the Altar. Her daughter Anne read a Reflection after Communion. Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’ Donnell, Denise Boyle and Sinead Finn. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. She is survived by her husband, Michael, son, Joseph, daughters Anne, Martina and Mary, sisters, Angela, Kathleen, Bried, brother Neily, grandchildren, in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Nancy was a great G.A.A. supporter and the local club formed a Guard of Honour from the Church Car Park to her home on Sunday evening and again on Tuesday from her home to the Church and from the Church to the Graveyard. President of the Club, Jimmy Mc Kelvey, gave an oration at the graveside. People also lined the street on both sides as the cortege passed and a large number of Glenties people living in Dublin were at St. Luke’s Hospital for the removal of her remains.

Nancy served as postmistress in the town from 1969 until she retired because of her illness about a year ago. She was a very popular member of the community, was always very helpful, often above and beyond the call of duty, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Teresa Mc Nelis, Narin Road, Glenties, who died on Thursday last.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Rosha Gallagher, Station Road, Glenties on the death recently of her sister Teresa Mc Laughlin in Scotland.

Sincere sympathy is extended to John Mc Dyre, Maas, Glenties on the death of his sister Mary B. Hughes, which took place recently in Coalisland.

The death took place suddenly at his home of John Byrne, Maas, Glenties on Sunday 5th March 2006. His remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Tuesday afternoon. Fr. Pat Prendergast P.P. Glenties celebrated Requiem Mass at 1.00p.m. Burial took place afterwards in the New Graveyard. John is survived by his brothers, Packie, James and Leo and sisters, Mary, Maas, Glenties, Nora Murphy, Donegal Town, Michael and Danny and sister, Annie Gallagher, England and brother, Manny in the U.S.A. His brothers Charlie and Josie predeceased him some years ago.

Congratulations to Anne Edel and Pat Ward, Derries, Glenties on the birth in Letterkenny Hospital recently of their third child, a baby brother (Tiarnán) for Laoise and Dearbla.

A planning application has now been submitted to the Donegal County Council for a Sports Facility at Scoil Mhuire, Glenties. The project is Ionad Pobail agus Spoirt Naomh Mhuire, Na Gleanntaí. Everyone in the community is thanked for their continued support.

Applications have to be in by 16th March for the intensive 4-day swimming course being held in Letterkenny pool from Monday 10th April until Thursday 13th April. Contact Bernie at 086 1005465 to book your child’s place.

As you are probably aware a number of car thefts have occurred in the Glenties and Fintown areas over the past few weeks. The majority of these crimes have occurred in car parks or areas where large numbers of people congregate, for example, attending Mass, Funerals, Football Matches etc. This type of crime is very much preventable, in that, if there is nothing left on the seat of the car, then the temptation is removed. We advise the public to exercise care when locking their cars, to ensure that nothing of value is left in view. Valuable items can be locked away in the boot or in the glove compartment.

Rainbows – a support programme for children and young people who are experiencing grief, starts in Glenties on Wednesday 15th March in The Day Centre, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent. Primary school children work from 6.45p.m. – 7.30p.m. and Teens from 8.00p.m. – 9.15p.m.Trained facilitators will be there to support each group.
