Glenties Notes 7th February 2008

The death took place at Letterkenny Hospital on Wednesday evening 30th January 2008 of Kathleen Brennan (nee Byrne), Main Street, Glenties. Her remains were brought to the home of her cousin Bernie Mc Loone, Main Street, on Thursday afternoon and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday evening. Kathleen’s cousin, Fr. John Mc Loone assisted by Fr. Pat Prendergast concelebrated Requiem Mass on Saturday morning at 11.00a.m. Readings were by Mary Francis Long and John Mc Loone. Fr. John read Prayers of the Faithful. Declan, Mary, Nicola and Chloe Mc Loone brought the Gifts to the Altar. A Reflection was read by Ann Mc Loone. Music and singing was by Pat and John F. O’ Donnell. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Kathleen is survived by cousins, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her husband Thomas predeceased her in November 1990. Kathleen lived all her life in Glenties where she had a Drapery Business until recent years.

Plans are afoot at Edeninfagh National School to commemorate the school’s 70th Anniversary in October of this year. The staff is currently compiling a history of the school and would appreciate the help of former students. If anyone has photos, stories and items of interest from the past, we would be grateful if you could contact Mary Quinn at the Glen Tavern. Charlie Daly Fianna Fail Cumann A.G.M. will take place in the Highlands Hotel on Friday evening 8th February at 8.00p.m. Also, on the same evening, Ogra C.D.C. are holding a Table Quiz at 9.00 p.m. in the same venue. Teams of four – 40 Euro per table. Your support would be very much appreciated. There will also be a raffle on the night.

Congratulations to James Trimble who graduated from University of Limerick with a Bachelor of Science Degree. James is a son of Patrick and Margaret Trimble, Maas, Glenties and is a past pupil of Kilkenny National School and St. Columba’s Comprehensive, School, Glenties. He is currently teaching in Community College, Carrick-on-Shannon.

The Special Olympics will hold their Annual Church Gate Collection next weekend. The collection will provide sports events, for people of all ages with a learning disability.

A new scheme has been announced for farmers who have a walkway through their land. This scheme will start with the Bluestack Way from Donegal Town to Ardara via Lough Eske, Drimarone, Doobin, Meenahalla and along the river from Glenties to Ardara. Any farmer or landowner along this route who is interested in details of the scheme should contact John at 086 6059220 or Frank Kelly D.L.D.C. at 074 9127057. A meeting with landowners will take place in due course.

The White Oaks Centre, Derryvane, Muff, Co. Donegal provides a residential treatment programme for people recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. The majority of the Rehabilitation Centre’s 700 clients are from Donegal. The centre is appealing for financial help and every parish has been asked to hold a once-off collection on the first Sunday of Lent. If you would like to support this cause please put your donation into the Offertory Collection basket next Saturday and Sunday – 9th / 10th February.

Yoga evening Class takes place in the Community Centre, Glenties on Wednesday evenings 7.30 – 9pm.

The following classes are part – funded by the Community Education Support Programme of Donegal VEC. 

Payroll- Manual & Computerised, 8 weeks in the Community Centre, Glenties, Monday night, 7.30 – 9 pm, Cost €50. Start date 11th Feb. Places available.

Digital Photography (basic), 8 weeks in the Community Centre, Glenties, Date & time to be decided, subject to interested numbers. Places available.
